Photographic Hide at Porini Rhino Camp - Ol Pejeta

The addition of a wildlife viewing hide at Porini Rhino Camp is proving popular with guests wanting to observe and photograph wildlife safely, yet in close proximity. The hide has been carefully placed to enhance wildlife-viewing right in front of camp. With the peaceful setting and the animals freely strolling in, we can really immerse ourselves in the surroundings and feel we are part of nature.

Spending time in a hide can, with a little patience, result in some incredible sightings. These images were taken from the hide by guest Jayne Simmons ...

... and this scene of elephants was taken by Porini Rhino Camp Guide Shadrack Sengeny from inside the hide.

The below video was taken from the hide by our friend and repeat guest Matt Caldwell during one of his visits to Porini Rhino Camp.

The hide blends into the surroundings and is unobtrusive to the wildlife that come to drink at the waterhole. It offers a great experience for guests to view and take great close up photographs of the animals that come to visit.

Black Rhino, elephants, lions, giraffe and many other animals are also frequent visitors, especially when it gets drier.

Porini Rhino Camp is an intimate camp with only eight tents including a two-roomed family unit with an interconnecting lounge. The camp is located in the 90,000 acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Mt Kenya.

The camp is located in the 90,000 acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Mt Kenya. All of the Big 5 are found here and this is the largest Black Rhino sanctuary in East Africa! Ol Pejeta is home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos, and a sanctuary for over 110 critically endangered black rhinos.

Porini Rhino Camp is helping accomplish the Conservancy’s aims of generating profits from wildlife tourism for reinvesting into community development in the local area. The camp staff is drawn from different Kenyan communities including members of the Maasai community from our conservancy projects at Selenkay in Amboseli and Olkinyei and Olare Motorogi in the Mara. The camp adheres to strict eco-friendly and responsible eco tourism principles.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy ensures excellent game-viewing and safari game drives – with “proper” open-sided, off-road (4×4) safari vehicles and expert safari guides from the camp.

In addition to the activities above there are a number of other optional activities which can be booked, these Include: Behind scenes chimpanzees, cycling safari, dog tracking, junior ranger program, lion tracking, meet the northern white rhinos and riding with rhinos.

From our Guest Comments Book at camp

We do not claim that our eco-camps are luxurious but they are certainly meant to be comfortable and staying with us gives our guests a more exclusive and intimate safari experience than the big tourist lodges, while at the same time helping to pay for the conservancies to continue providing a protected habitat for wildlife.

Porini Camps include guided nature walks with Maasai warriors to get up close to the flora and fauna and learn about Maasai ways of life, as well as bush picnics and sundowners.

As so many people rely on TripAdvisor reviews when choosing where to stay, you may wish to read the reviews of our Porini camps written by recent guests who stayed with us.
